Symposium on Careers in Science, Academia and beyond

The NCCR Chemical Biology is proud to announce the first Symposium on “Careers in Science, Academia and beyond” that will take place on November 29 and 30, in the Campus Biotech (Geneva). This event is open to all Master & PhD students, as well as postdocs in all science disciplines, from all Swiss universities. Become aware, discover, identify and learn the many science career possibilities ahead!

This two-day Symposium welcomes all young scientists, struggling with these crucial questions: Am I heading in the right direction? What do I need to do next? Can I change direction? Where to go? How to do it? Participants will become more aware of the steps required for academic careers and the many other career opportunities beyond bench research. We have invited 25 inspiring speakers to help participants discover their best fit and learn how their scientific training matches with the rich diversity of career options that can follow a science education.

Programme

The event will host a broad array of talks, toolkit talks and workshops on a range of topics for researchers at all stages of their career development:

  • Career discovery talks are designed to improve your knowledge on specific careers’ sectors. Hand-picked speakers have been invited to give you an insider information on possible career paths ranging from academia or administration, to industry or entrepreneurship, education, communication and alternative paths! Several opportunities to meet with these professionals and build your contacts network are provided.
  • Career toolkit talks are proposed to help you improve and promote your job-seeking skills and career development strategies in academia and outside of it. You will better understand what employers are looking for, how to handle a job interview and how to embrace a career change as a positive challenge. Moreover, the varied opportunities related to a career in science communication are presented.
  • Career workshops run at the end of the second day will teach you how to network successfully, boost your self-assurance to dream your own career path, identify your transferable skills and develop your negotiation skills. Number of participants is limited: 12-40 participants (depending on the workshop). Registration to the workshops is on a first-come, first-served basis!
